Farewell Doreen and HIPPY Wesley

It is with grateful hearts that Great Potentials Foundation says farewell and thank you to Doreen and HIPPY Wesley.

For the last 24 years, the HIPPY programme has served the Wesley community in central Auckland and for much of that time it was led by Doreen Wakefield.

Across two and a half decades in Wesley, and with Doreen’s 22 years of leadership as Coordinator, the programme has supported thousands of children and families to achieve success in education, community participation, and employment, helping them work towards their goals and aspirations.

Doreen has led with passion, dedication and deep commitment. Great Potentials Foundation acknowledges the significant loss of both Doreen and the HIPPY programme to the wider Wesley community.

The impact of Doreen’s leadership and the HIPPY programme will continue to live on in the many families and children whose lives have been shaped for the better. We wish Doreen all the very best for the future and thank her sincerely for her extraordinary contribution.

Southern Cross Campus Senior School was one of the very first schools to open its doors to the Mentoring and Tutoring Education Scheme (MATES) in 2002. What began as a new mentoring initiative has grown into a partnership that has supported generations of students.

Polait is a Social Worker for Family Harm at Great Potentials Foundation. She works with individuals and whānau who have experienced family harm, whether emotional, physical, or psychological. Her role is to help keep them safe and connect them with the right support.
HIPPY Lower Hutt visit to the Marae

Seven families from HIPPY Lower Hutt came together for a visit to Waiwhetu Marae, home of the local iwi/tangata whenua. With support from the Upper Hutt and Hutt City Welcoming Communities Coordinators, and in collaboration with the Nepali community and the Red Cross, the visit helped families connect more deeply with Māori culture.
MATES Junior 'Uni for a Day' 2025

Our MATES Junior mentees from six intermediate schools joined us for the MATES Junior Uni for a Day event at the Auckland University of Technology (AUT) City Campus. With the support of AUT staff, our mentees took part in a range of activities, workshops, and campus tours designed to help them explore future career and study pathways.
