Stories Family Service Centre Stories From Kristen: Finding Joy in Every Day Meet Kristen, who has been an Early Learning Centre teacher at the Family Service Centre in Papakura for over a year. Kristen is committed to inspiring and supporting our tamariki aged 2-5 years and finds joy in every moment she shares with them. “Kia ora I’m Kristen. I came to New Zealand in 2019 to pursue a bachelor’s degree at the University of Auckland, driven by my strong interest in social science. I choose psychology as my major and took courses in child development and lifespan development, where I discovered a deep fascination with observing children as they grow. I understand that early experiences significantly influence adulthood, and as a teacher, I have the chance to help create positive memories for young children. I see teaching as an opportunity to prevent issues from developing later in life. In February 2023, I joined Great Potentials Foundation as an Early Learning Centre (ELC) teacher. This was my first teaching job after gaining registration, and it has provided me with valuable knowledge, hands-on experience, and fond memories with our Tamariki and whānau at the centre. Each day at the ELC centre is filled with laughter and countless learning opportunities. My day begins with kitchen prep and welcoming the children as they arrive. Their warm greetings each morning always brightens my day. We have mat time with stories or dancing before morning tea. This is followed by a variety of activities and special celebrations designed to help the children interact with others, form friendships and learn how to play together. When we are outside, I ensure they’re playing safely while engaging in outdoor activities and exploring the natural world. I see my role as a scaffolder, supporting and extending our tamariki’s interests, allowing them to take creative control. Through this, they learn and improve their cognitive, language, coordination, and motor skills. At the end of the day, I update parents on their children's learning and progress. A big win for us this year has been the significant improvement in children's attendance, with 80% to 100% showing up almost every day. We have also received lots of positive feedback from parents through daily chats and comments on our posts, which has been really encouraging. Being an ECE teacher is incredibly rewarding, especially when it comes to bonding with the children. Engaging with our young Tamariki reminds me that embracing a childlike spirit—being 'silly' and sharing joy—is where true happiness begins."
