Sixteen MATES Senior Mentees from Southern Cross Campus, Waitakere College and Auckland Girls Grammar School had a wonderful time visiting Jasmax, one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s leading architecture practices.

Our Mentees started the day with a quick office hour at the Jasmax Parnell, Auckland office, followed by a few presentations from Waka Maia and Moana Practitioners and professionals from different disciplines in the architecture and design departments of Jasmax.

During the day, our Mentees were divided into groups to participate in an innovative and fun group design task. Mentees were asked to build a vehicle and/or a living space with foil, sticks, and paper under four extreme scenarios, including volcano eruption, hurricane, space colonization, and energy crisis.

At the end of the day, the Mentees learned about the career pathways of architecture, interior design, urban design, and landscape architecture design.

“It’s great for our students to hear from the amazing Waka Māia- who bring an authentic Māori voice to design and encourage more diversity within architecture and learnt about architecture and discovered other pathways available to them that they otherwise might not have known about. The students were able to apply their skills to a design challenge that required future thinking and creativity. Overall, the day was a lot of fun for all the students and architects involved.”, Connor, MATES Programme Manager said.

Thank you, Amy and Icao from JASMAX, for organising such an amazing day for our MATES programme!
