Over the Term 2 school break, Lane Neave Lawyers partnered with our MATES (Mentoring and Tutoring Education Scheme) programme to organise an Open Day at their Auckland office. The day featured several workshops offering insights into the law industry and provided an excellent opportunity for our Mentors and Year 13 Mentees to connect with junior and senior lawyers, and the communications and events support staff.

The Day began with a warm welcome and a Karakia, followed by a quick office tour. Students enjoyed icebreaker activities, allowing them to introduce themselves and get to know one another. Peter Dawn, CEO, shared his inspiring journey, followed by a Q&A session with solicitors about university life and being young lawyers.

Nu’ualofa, Year 13 Mentee at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate, shared her reflections on the event, "Today's experience at Lane Neave was incredibly informative and beneficial. I gained valuable insights from the speakers and employees and learned a great deal about corporate law. The three junior lawyers were particularly helpful, and overall, this experience has greatly boosted my confidence in planning a career in law."

Another mentee, Stephanie, also shared her key highlights and said, "Today, I learned three key lessons: the advantages of becoming a lawyer, the fact that you don’t need to know everything from the start, and the importance of learning as you go. I also gained a clearer understanding of what Lane Neave offers and how it can support my career. Hearing that even junior lawyers continue to grow despite occasional uncertainty has significantly increased my confidence. I now feel more assured about charting my path toward a career in law."

In the afternoon, the day continued with an insightful presentation focused on networking and personal branding. The session explored essential strategies for building a professional network and effectively promoting one's personal brand. This session not only provided valuable knowledge but also encouraged everyone to connect with each other and apply their new skills.

Elisapeta, a mentee at Mangere College who aspires to study law, shared her thoughts, "The day was excellent, offering valuable insights and challenges that deepened my understanding of the legal pathway. I now feel confident in pursuing a career in law, having learned about the challenges and benefits involved."
